Getting a foot in the door: Early Career Interns

Opening doors for future talent is a critical part of building and fostering talent and ensuring a dynamic workforce at JELD-WEN.

While we offer many opportunities across the globe – including apprentice programs in Europe and internship opportunities specific to locations – our Early Career Summer Intern Program gives students interested in corporate functions a 10-week opportunity at JELD-WEN.

Choosing from one of six functional areas (engineering, finance, human resources, information technology, marketing, and operations), these interns are exposed to a professional work environment, challenging projects, and professional development activities. The program also serves as a talent pipeline for our Early Career Rotational Program.

The interns are located across the United States and will learn valuable skills at our various plants and facilities.

Intern Kat Counce says she was drawn to JELD-WEN because of our dedication to the environment and developing young professionals. But more importantly, she’s ready to increase her skills in the operations field.

“I love being an intern at JELD-WEN,” said Kat. “Everyone here is so welcoming to interns and genuinely wants to help us grow. I’ve met so many people that have given me such helpful career advice.”

Calculating their future

Interns Kent Poitinger, Dylan Pirani and Thomas Hayes are all here hoping to calculate a bright professional future by learning more about the finance field. Dylan goes to the University of North Texas and says he’s hoping to land a sourcing finance role after he graduates. Thomas, who’s attending Penn State, says it was the perfect opportunity for him to get hands-on experience in the summer while staying in his hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina.

Kent, who’s also interning in the Charlotte area, says JELD-WEN’s culture and company values are one thing that attracted him to the internship program.

“I feel that being an intern at JELD WEN has allowed me to get a glimpse into what corporate work involves,” said Kent. “I also feel extremely welcomed by all members of staff. Everyone I have reached out to has been more than willing to help me with my project and encourage me along the way.

Applying what he's learned

Another intern learning at our company’s headquarters is Spencer Youmans. As he’s studying Information Technology (IT) at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Spencer says the internship was a perfect fit to enhance the skills he is learning at college. He has goals to become a data analyst, cybersecurity expert or developer.

“I feel like I have been given a great opportunity. I have had many chances to meet new people and establish valuable connections,” Spencer said. “I’ve also had the opportunity to get hands-on experience with many new tools, such as Power BI and Mendix.”

Finding the right fit

Here to brush up on their marketing skills are interns Campbell Hickman and Queen Johnson. Campbell has been working with the product marketing team for the summer and, great news, she still enjoys marketing. Campbell says she’s also interested in other aspects of the business. Her internship at JELD-WEN has allowed her to experience the corporate world for the first time and to explore cross-functionally beyond marketing.

Queen says a friend who was part of our Early Career Rotational Program spoke highly of the program and encouraged her to take on an internship at JELD-WEN. She enjoyed the internship program so much that she returned for a second year. Queen says she hopes to deal with the more creative and design side of marketing or analytics.

“I really enjoy being an intern at JELD-WEN as I feel that it offers me a unique glimpse into a professional realm within a supportive environment,” Queen said. “I am glad I can be exposed to an office setting while I am still finishing up my degree.”

Family ties

Intern Kelly MacFalls is thanking her dad since years ago, he worked for Caradco, which ended up being acquired by JELD-WEN. She’s interning to learn more about the HR field and potentially become an HR generalist or work in talent acquisition.

“The program was really enticing to me because it involved all different functions and I was looking for a program where I could be a part of a cohort of interns, not just on my own,” Kelly said.

Kelly also said she’s been given many learning opportunities that have helped her grow as a young professional.  “I’ve been assigned meaningful work, which makes the experience impactful,” she says.

Six degrees of separation

Tim Orr and Jonas Hartline have found common interests through the program. In addition to having a common field of study (engineering), they both attend school in Oregon. Tim is studying at Oregon State University and is learning more about the new product development industry and says he would also be interested in exploring manufacturing engineering. Jonas is getting his degree in engineering from the Oregon Institute of Technology and is focused on learning more about mechanical engineering and manufacturing engineering.

“I feel very welcomed here at JELD-WEN and have already learned so much that I can use throughout my career,” said Jonas.
