Building for the future | Investing in young professionals

At JELD-WEN, young talent thrives through internships and apprenticeships, shaping not only their careers but also the future of an entire industry. Peek into their stories and see how JELD-WEN is inspiring the next generation.
As a global leader in manufacturing of building products, the future is being built today—not just through products, but through people. We are dedicated to advancing all employees; for early-career professionals, they are encouraged to grow through our comprehensive internship program in the United States and diverse apprenticeship opportunities across Europe.

A gateway to growth

2024 JELD-WEN summer interns

JELD-WEN interns are taken through a 10-week immersive experience aligned with one of six functional tracks: engineering, finance, human resources, IT, marketing or operations.

The Summer Internship Program allows young professionals to work on both individual and team projects, equipping them for future full-time employment opportunities.

"Every intern is seen as a potential future leader," explains Jazmyn Johnson, university relations program lead at JELD-WEN. "We provide over 50 hours of professional development, which includes sessions led by industry and academic leaders, to ensure our interns are not just participants but are prepared to innovate and lead."

Former intern Campbell Hickman was hired full time as a public relations specialist.

Since its inception in 2020, the program boasts impressive outcomes. Approximately 85% of interns receive a full-time or return internship offer, with 80% accepting these offers. Former intern, Campbell Hickman, is part of that 80%. She came to JELD-WEN in 2023 as part of the Summer Internship Program. One year later, she accepted a job as a public relations specialist on the communications team.

“I was able to transfer the skills I learned last summer to a somewhat different role," Campbell said. "The ability to work cross-functionally and get to know different areas of the business allowed me to form relationships and connections in different departments which I believe will continue to influence my success here at JELD-WEN. I am so thankful for everyone across departments who has encouraged my career and development.”

Crafting skills across borders

In Europe, JELD-WEN’s apprenticeship program reflects the diverse industrial landscapes of Germany, Switzerland and Austria. These programs, which can last up to five years, are tailored to meet the specific needs of each country's training framework. As an apprentice, young professionals can immerse themselves in the profession they choose, and each apprenticeship offers training models to set them up for success.

Markus Breitenbaumer has been a JELD-WEN apprentice since August 2021.

Markus Breitenbaumer started his apprenticeship in August 2021 to tap into the carpentry sector and is working to help build DANA products, part of our family of brands known for high-quality workmanship, sophisticated design, unique innovations and individual solutions.

“When I began my apprenticeship as a carpentry technician, I learned important skills, techniques and gained knowledge to be successful. As I got better, I was able to design and manufacture furniture for our company and customers,” Markus said.

Markus is putting what he’s learned to good use five days a week. He says every morning he meets with his team to discuss which projects and machines they’ll be using. As an order comes in, he starts by drawing it in 2D and then moving on to 3D version. The next step is a creating a cost estimate for the workpiece. Markus says he uses the day perfecting his craft so the end-user will be satisfied.

“I have found the perfect apprenticeship for me, one that I enjoy and where I can show off my skills," Markus said. "I’m learning a lot because I’m constantly faced with new challenges through my work.”

Markus’ apprenticeship wraps up in August 2025. His journey is a testament to the robust training and opportunities offered at our company.
