JELD-WEN celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Join us as we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at JELD-WEN, the month between September 15 and October 15, when we honor and explore the rich cultural heritage of the Hispanic community.

From September 15 to October 15, JELD-WEN takes part in the widespread celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Especially during this month, it is important to pay tribute to diverse cultures, histories and contributions of the Hispanic and Latino communities.

Meet two JELD-WEN associates who shared their thoughts on the importance of Hispanic Heritage Month, workplace representation and what Hispanic culture means to them.

Ezequiel Loza Jr., inside sales supervisor

What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you?
Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to honor and celebrate the rich cultural contributions of Latino and Hispanic communities.

For me, it’s a time to appreciate and reflect on my own heritage and how being a first-generation Mexican American has helped push me to be the person I am today. Hispanic Heritage Month is also a time when my family recognizes the struggles and achievements of those who came before us.

Can you discuss the importance of representation in the workplace?
Representation in the workplace is critical because it fosters a diverse workplace that encourages innovation and creativity.

Having people from different backgrounds can lead to a broader range of perspectives and ideas. It also reflects the community we serve, making it easier for diverse clients and customers to connect with our organization.

Do you have any motivational words for other Hispanic people pursuing their dreams or aspiring to be in your field of work?
My advice for Hispanic individuals pursuing their dreams in this field would be to embrace your unique perspectives and experiences – they are an asset.

Look for a mentor that can provide guidance and support that can help guide you in the right direction.

Are there any Hispanic people who have inspired you to do what you do or to be who you are today?
My parents were a huge influence on the person I am today. They instilled in me a strong work ethic and the importance of family. They showed me that through resiliency, hard work and sacrifice, anything can be accomplished.

Can you discuss the importance of representation in the workplace?
We are a team at work, and it is essential that everyone understands workplace procedures – by having a diverse workforce we can ensure that people feel comfortable, valued, and appreciated, even if they speak another language.

How do you think JELD-WEN helps you celebrate your Hispanic Heritage?
Mi Casa, one of JELD-WEN's employee resource groups, is a huge platform that allows us to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. The plants also make an effort to celebrate Latinos daily.

You feel the culture as soon as you set foot on the plant floor. There is often Latino music playing, team members speaking to one another in their native language, and on break we have Cuban coffee that is offered to anyone who would like some.  You will also see the sharing of the Latino food amongst team members – it's always fun because Latinos are very proud of their food so there is always a competition about whose arroz con pollo was better.

Are there any Hispanic people who have inspired you to do what you do or to be who you are today?
Both my dad and my soccer coach had a formative impact on my life. My dad worked two jobs so he could give us everything we needed. At times, it was difficult for my dad to communicate with people in his profession because he barely spoke English. However, he overcame these barriers by learning English, and this taught my siblings and me our capability to achieve our goals no matter the obstacles.

My soccer coach was from Ecuador and had a no excuses policy. He always expected the best from us and taught us the importance of working as a team. It’s ironic that I chose a career that requires me to work with others as a team. And like my coach always said, a team always cares for each other, so I strive to be the team member that can help with paperwork, translations, benefits, or 401k questions.

Remember where you came from, and the life lessons you received will help you navigate the professional world. The workplace is all about working with a team, so pay forward all the help you received along the way and aid others when they need it.
