“Reduce, reuse, recycle” is not just a slogan for JELD-WEN’s Penrith door plant

In line with JELD-WEN's global 2050 goals, our plant in Penrith, England, has accomplished more than one sustainability milestone.

The Penrith team is ensuring “reduce, reuse, recycle,” is not just a slogan, but that it is put into practice every day. The Penrith facility has accomplished 50% of its sustainability goals, including zero waste to landfill and 100% global sourcing of sustainable or certified wood.

We continue to make progress on our ESG initiatives and have already made significant headway on our goals.

HAMISH WHITE

OPERATIONS DIRECTOR

We caught up with Hamish White, operations director at the Penrith plant, who talked us through the plant’s sustainability journey. “We developed our ESG priorities by evaluating our current state and looking for solutions,” said Hamish. “Now we have fast-tracked our journey and accomplished many of these.”

Reuse

In the journey toward achieving zero waste to landfill, the first crucial step was to evaluate the waste production processes and identify the types of waste reaching landfills. The Penrith team discovered that plastic banding was getting tangled with other waste, making it difficult to separate. By sorting waste into designated bins, they were able to remove plastic pieces effectively, while non-plastic items could be recycled or reused. Thanks to the consistent dedication of employees throughout the plant, this new process significantly reduced the waste sent to landfills.

Recycle

Assessment of Penrith’s current state showed ash from biomass boilers was also going to landfill waste. So, the team investigated other potential uses for the byproduct. Now, it is being used in the creation of tarmac, an asphalt-like road pavement material.

Reduce

The Penrith plant removed single-use plastics from production and, instead, has opted to replace all glazed-door packaging with recyclable cardboard. This change removes 17 tons of plastic wrap from the supply chain.

“We continue to make progress on our ESG initiatives and have already made significant headway on our goals,” said Hamish. “Our ESG efforts not only lower JELD-WEN’s environmental impact, but also improve employee health and safety. Employees can see a tangible benefit in their working conditions.”

With the help of employee commitment, the Penrith site is helping JELD-WEN make important progress toward its global ESG goals, contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable world.
