VPI Quality Windows helps pave the way for construction’s next generation

When students are thinking about their future, educators say hands-on experiences are an engaging way to explore potential careers. Students in Southern California got a first-hand look at what it’s like to work in the construction process during the annual SoCal Design Build Competition.

Also participating in this year’s competition was VPI Quality Windows, a JELD-WEN brand. “This event is so critical to our industry and gives the next generation fantastic exposure to career opportunities they likely did not know existed,” said David Tunstall, territory sales manager at VPI Quality Windows.

During the competition put on by the Construction Industry Education Foundation (CIEF), more than 500 students worked in teams to design, plan and construct 96-square-foot structures. In addition to sponsoring the two-day event, David and his team at VPI Quality Windows donated 35 2’x2’ slider windows.

“This was our first time participating in the event, and I was most impressed by everyone's dedication to ensuring its success,” said David. “My biggest takeaway was seeing students from all around SoCal truly enjoying building the structures and working together.”

During the competition, students were judged by industry professionals on the completion of design, construction, code compliance and safety.

According to the CIEF website, in addition to bringing awareness to the growing skilled labor shortage, the competition provides students with valuable insights into necessary skills and educational opportunities.

“This event aligns perfectly for us because we're directly connected to the construction industry, and this is a really great cause exposing and encouraging youth to think seriously about careers in this segment,” said David.
