Building futures | JELD-WEN and VPI partner with CIEF to inspire the next generation of construction leaders

By donating innovative products that foster engaging and educational experiences, JELD-WEN and VPI™ Quality Windows work to empower aspiring young builders.

JELD-WEN and VPI are helping students embrace their craftsmanship and creativity thanks to a partnership with the Construction Industry Education Foundation (CIEF). Through the Design Build Competition, students have the opportunity to get hands-on industry experience and learn about future careers.

The goal of the Design Build Competition is to promote career awareness of the construction industry among high school students. Over a two-day period, students design and build a structure featuring donated VPI windows.

Each participating school has the option to design their building from provided plans or create their own unique design—a testament to the creativity of the students. Students get to see every aspect of the building process from start to finish.

During a recent competition in southern California, one student was awarded a partial scholarship. At the event, VPI and CIEF celebrated the winner, high school student Isaac Galvan, who will pursue a position in the construction industry as he attends Imperial Valley College in the fall.

Following the competition, the completed structures are donated to various organizations, providing lasting value and serving important community needs. After the recent competition in Huntington Beach, California, one was given to a family with a child who has special needs to become a playhouse. The others were donated to a high school softball team, and a local parks and recreation center.

Territory Sales Manager Sergio Sandoval said "I am grateful and proud to be part of an organization that gives back to the community through initiatives led by CIEF to train kids in valuable construction industry skills. Supporting such an important cause is truly rewarding, and I’m thrilled that JELD-WEN and VPI could play a role in making it happen."

Building on the success of the competition in California, VPI participated in an additional Design Build Competition in Salem, Oregon, reinforcing its commitment to supporting students in their pursuit of careers in construction.

Participants had a chance to develop both technical and creative skills while constructing structures featuring donated VPI windows. This event provided yet another valuable opportunity for students to engage with industry professionals, refine their craftsmanship, and gain real-world insights into the construction process.
