Gary Sinise Foundation and JELD-WEN welcome wounded veteran to his new home

Planned and built with thoughtful consideration, U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Dennet Oregon, a double amputee, will be able to use his wheelchair comfortably in his new specially-adapted smart home.

It is finally time for wounded veteran U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Dennet Oregon, his wife Katherine (Kat) and their children to move into their new Murietta, California home from the Gary Sinise Foundation. The keys to this specially adapted smart home were presented to the Oregon family at a home dedication ceremony.

Joe Miranda, chair of JELD-WEN's Veterans' Network ERG with U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Dennet Oregon

Joe Miranda, director of product management and chair of JELD-WEN's Veterans' Network Employee Resource Group (ERG), attended the ceremony. “As a veteran myself, this is one of the most emotional and humbling events I have ever been a part of,” said Joe. “It was an honor and privilege to represent JELD-WEN and our Veterans' Network ERG in this selfless act of giving."

This home, featuring Siteline® windows from our Rantoul, Illinois facility and LaCantina® patio doors from our Oceanside, California facility, is the first to be fitted with windows and doors donated from JELD-WEN to the Gary Sinise Foundation.

Dennet, a double amputee, will be able to comfortably use his wheelchair in the brand-new home. “I haven’t been able to use the master bathroom where we’ve lived because I haven’t been able to squeeze [the wheelchair] in,” shared Dennet, “It’s going to be nice to actually use a bathroom close to where I sleep.”

Planned and built with care, thoughtful consideration and passion, this home was eager to begin holding new lifelong memories for the Oregon family. “We have more than what we need in this home, and we are very grateful for it,” said Kat.

“Our effort is just one small ripple in the ocean that builds into the wave of giving our nation’s veterans the freedom and independence they deserve for the sacrifices they made for our country. It is clear that the Gary Sinise Foundation is a family – a family that looks after and provides for its’ own with a passion unmatched,” Joe said.

The Gary Sinise Foundation's R.I.S.E. program, which provides specially adapted smart homes and home modifications to severely wounded veterans, first responders and their families, partnered with JELD-WEN’s Veteran’s Network ERG to bring mission and purpose into action.
